Epic MegaGames, formerly known as Potomac Computer Systems, was established by Tim Sweeney in 1991 while he was still learning at the University of Maryland. Potomac was then renamed into Epic MegaGames as an effort to make this person studio seem larger.
As the expectation, Epic MegaGames had 50 employees by 1997. One year later, the company developed its first-person shooter named Unreal, along with the first iteration of the Unreal engine.
At this time, “Mega” was removed from the company’s name to become Epic Games. After that, the company created the highly popular shooter Unreal Tournament and the more popular Gears of War series.
2012 is a historical milestone of the company as it moved to the “games as a service” business model and released the establishment of a new game called Fortnite. However, it was not until 2017 that Fortnite was officially released.
Before the release of the main game, the firm publicized a battle royale mode for free. The Battle Royale mode of Fortnite quickly attracted a numerous audience and deeply overshadowed the name game released after that.
Fortnite achieved over 125 million players by May 2018 and brought the company an estimated $1 billion in revenue by July 2018. Notably, the success of such game helped the Epic Games’ value increased to $4.5 billion by July 2018, from $825 million before the release of the game.
Notably, Epic Games was successful in breaking new ground by persuading Sony to permit cross-play with Windows and Xbox, and gradually all platforms have been allowed. By March 2019, the game attracted 250 million players, and Epic Games is valued at an estimated $15 billion.
